Branch 594’s 2018 Campaign
Every year, from the last Friday of October to November 11, tens of millions of Canadians wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to honour Canada’s Veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. While the Poppy is distributed freely to all who wish to wear one, the Legion gratefully accepts donations to the Poppy Fund.
Here is a brief summary about our 2018 Poppy Campaign.
As of our last General Membership meeting in 2018, we had 400+ members. Of those we had a 9¼% turn out from our membership to pin Poppies; 37 members and 10 non-members. I know that there are members, that due to health reasons cannot make it out to pin Poppies & these members dutifully send us donation cheques to help support the Poppy Campaign and we truly appreciate that.
Two of our members; Evelyn Bernyk (over 90 years old) and John Antaya (70 years old) put in the most hours pinning, Evelyn pinning 52 hours and John a close second.
We have members that volunteer to deliver approximately 200 Poppy Collection Boxes to many businesses. We monitor those establishments to make sure that the Poppies stay abundant and collect the money, visiting them as needed, using our vehicles/gas (50 plus hours).
Also, a big thank you to the people who volunteered their time to sort and count all of the donations for the bank deposits, approximately 70 hours.
So here are some numbers; we had a total of 16 days to pin, 8 stores to pin for a total of 1,176 hours. Out of 1,176 hours we only pinned 204 hours or 17 3/8% of all of the total time.
For 2018 we were approximately $3,000.00 short of the 2017 total.
Members swore when initiated, “To promote the work of the organization, including active participation in the Poppy Campaign.” Something to remember.
We need more members & volunteers to pin Poppies. Contact a friend, partner up and volunteer! Lets make 2019 a banner year. Come on out and help support our veterans!
For 2019 and under the guidance of Archie Neilsen, Comrade Gerry Ciurysek will be the Poppy Chair. Thank you Gerry for taking the lead, the Poppy Campaign is one of the most important aspects of the Legion. Also, a special thank you to Archie for his many years serving as the Poppy Chair, your dedication is much appreciated.
